Barriers to effective business communication



The people all over the world are living on the idea of communication. If there had not been any communication, there would not have been any interaction amongst the people. The main idea of communication is to portray a message to another person, it does not matter how you communicate in your social life but business life brings you all the more complexities of communication. There are vast amounts of barriers to effective business communication, simply because people tend to misunderstand the message due to many interferences in business work. In a business, there are people coming from different backgrounds and experiences, each of them have their own work style. The problem comes when there are different points of view, no teamwork presence and difficulty in understanding. Such problems can lead to barriers to effective business communication in longer run and can create a danger for future business accomplishments.

Everyone communicates differently and each one of has his own style of conveying the message that he may find it easy. Business communication is something that we are not powerful at, and as we get experience we become powerful in the talks. Given below are some of the exclusive barriers to effective business communication that are seen in organizations today:

  • Physical Barriers:

    These are the barriers which stop good effective communication physically mainly due closed office doors for people in higher hierarchy. There are marked out area portraying a particular territory or fiefdoms that does not allow a layman to enter. The larger work area also stops the communication between the people. According to the research, a closer proximity of work place between individuals allows for a better communication as long as they have their own personal space.

  • The language Barrier:

    This happens when people belonging to different countries or communities come under one roof to work together. A person may not understand what the other person is trying to say even if they speak the same language. There are cases, where people of different languages go extremely well because of the common understanding but at some place it might fail.

  • The Gender barriers:

    The way a woman and a man communicate is different because of the wiring of brains in both the genders. A woman tends to speak 3 times more than a man speaks in a day. A man’s speech is located in the left hand side of the brain and so his communication is compartmentalized and logical where as a female’s speech is located in both the hemispheres through which they talk logic with emotions.

  • The Perception Barrier:

    Each individual born on earth is different and that is the reason why they think different. What a person might think from one point of view might be different from what another person thinks from other point of view.

  • The Emotional barrier:

    This barriers arises when people become very mindful of what they are going to speak next, this especially happens since childhood when they are taught to take care of what they are speaking. This barrier comprises of fear, mistrust and suspiciousness as the main factors. People with such ideas in mind, become vulnerable and hence this stunts their thinking power and communication.

  • The Interpersonal Barriers:

    These are the major barriers to communication that distances people from one another. There are either misunderstandings or failure to put their efforts to understand each other. The interpersonal barriers are ranked at the top of problems in organizations today. There are cases of withdrawal by a person or group of people, the rituals followed by some groups in the company, the past times of people may have different priorities.

You can break these organizational barriers by your own willpower and passion to maintain good relationships with the people working in your organization.
